What are the factors for choosing the tunnel lighting source?

When choosing about the tunnel lighting we can pay more attention to these points, such as environmental conditions and the technical requirements of lamps.

The environmental conditions in the tunnel are poor, compared with ordinary indoor lighting and road lighting, tunnel lighting lamps have higher requirements as below:

Environmental conditions

Ambient temperature: -15~+45℃(ambient temperature of lamps using -20 ~+45℃);

Relative humidity: 35%~90%(when the environment is 25℃, the average relative humidity is less than 90%, some installation locations will produce condensation)

Atmospheric pressure: 80kPa~110kPa

Wind speed: 0~30m/s (mechanical ventilation)

Air pollution: dust pollution is serious, metal dust pollution must be considered;

Visibility: The impact of a large number of vehicle exhaust on environmental visibility must be considered

Corrosion strength: It is necessary to consider the corrosion of the temperature and humidity environment, oil and dust on the surface of the lamp, and consider the corrosion of chemical drugs such as detergents used by tunnel managers.


The technical requirements of lamps

Tunnel lighting fixtures should have anti-moisture, anti-corrosion, anti-vibration performance, and should be safe and reliable, easy to maintain. The luminaire enclosure shall reach the specified protection level.

The lamp must be able to work normally in the above environment, the lamp should be able to work for a long time in the sulfur dioxide (SO₂) concentration greater than 30mg/m³, nitrogen pentoxide (N₂O₅) concentration greater than 100mg/m³ and other corrosive gases often exist, and the relative humidity in the environment of 90%. After installation, the lamp should be able to withstand the wind pressure of 10m/s and work normally.

The lighting distribution requirements are reasonable, with appropriate illuminance uniformity and illuminance level, high life, energy saving, green, and no glare.

The lamp should work normally under 220V (+5%~10%) voltage. Luminaire power factor should be greater than 0.85, luminaire efficiency is not less than 65%. Lamps should be resistant to electric shock.

Besides, here are some key things to keep in mind:

1. Energy efficiency: It's important to choose a lighting source that is energy efficient, as tunnels require a lot of lighting and this can add up quickly in terms of energy costs.

2. Durability: Tunnels can be harsh environments, with exposure to moisture, dust, and other contaminants. Choose a lighting source that can withstand these conditions and is durable enough to last for a long time.

3. Color temperature: The color temperature of the lighting can have a big impact on how safe and comfortable the tunnel feels to drivers. A warmer color temperature can create a more welcoming and soothing atmosphere, while a cooler temperature can help drivers stay alert.

4. Maintenance requirements: Choose a lighting source that is easy to maintain and replace, as tunnels can be difficult to access and any downtime can cause major disruptions. Some commonly used lighting sources for tunnels include LED lighting, high-pressure sodium lamps, and metal halide lamps. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it's important to consider the specific needs of your tunnel when making your choice.

Generally speaking, if the entrance and exit sections of a highway tunnel need to be enhanced with lighting, higher-power LED tunnel lights will be used, such as 100W, 150W, 200W, etc., while lower-power LED tunnel lights will be used for the basic lighting section in the middle, such as 30W, 40W, 50W, etc. The power of the LED tunnel light in the transition section will be between the enhanced lighting section and the intermediate section, such as 70W, 80W, etc. How much power should be selected for LED tunnel lights? If it is a new tunnel, there will be clear requirements in the lighting design volume. If it is an old tunnel renovation, you can directly refer to the LED tunnel light power mentioned above. Consedering the tunnel inside condition, we are supposed to choose lights which are robust aluminum alloy housing with anodized surface for strength and corrosion resistance. Flexible installation options (hanging, ceiling, surface-mounted) which can easy to mount if the lights are broken.
